ORIGIN/HABITAT: Mexico, Central America, the West Indies, Venezuela, and Surinam. In Mexico, plants are found in the states of Veracruz, San Lusi Potosí, Hidalgo, and Chiapas. In Belize, the plants are fairly common in moist forests and scrub at 150-1950 ft. (50-600 m) in the Cayo, Stann Creek, and Toledo Districts. The Central American plants grow in dense tropical forests from sea level to 4450 ft. (0-1350 m), but most collections are recorded from below 3300 ft. (1000 m). Plants are found in both the Pacific and Caribbean watersheds.
