ORIGIN/HABITAT: Sri Lanka (Ceylon) through India, eastward through Burma
and Indochina into southwest Yunnan Province in China. Distribution
continues eastward through the Philippines and southward through Malaya,
Sumatra, Java, the Kangean Archipelago, just off the northeast coast of
Java, and possibly in Borneo. In India this orchid is reported through
both the northern and southern regions at 2600-4900 ft. (800-1500 m). In
Thailand, collections have been made at various locations throughout the
country, both at low elevations in the warm, moist lowlands, in the cooler
mountains at elevations of 1000-2600 ft. (300-800 m), and in the extreme
southern zone of peninsular Thailand in both the lowlands and at
elevations to 3950 ft. (1200 m). In Malaya, plants are found in the north
in the states of Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan, Perak, and Terengganu. In Java,
R. retusa is common all over the island mostly at lower elevations, but
plants are sometimes found as high as 3300 ft. (1000 m). They are
particularly common in planted teak forests wherever the dry season is not
too long, which is mostly in the southern half of the island. In the
Philippines, plants are restricted to the Island of Luzon where they grow
in Bataan, Bulacan, Cavite, and Rizal Provinces.
