The following information is based on the name of the plant provided by the donor, and assumes that the name is correct. If the plant has been misidentified, then the following information may not be correct.
This text is copyrighted by the Bakers and may not be reproduced without permission.

ORIGIN/HABITAT: Costa Rica, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. This orchid has been reported as growing both as an epiphyte and as a terrestrial and is commonly found in wet mountane forest at elevations to 4900 ft. (1500). When Dunsterville & Garay (1961) first described this plant as Xylobium variegatum, they reported the habitat In Venezuela as "Guatopo: fairly tall dense forest at about 2000 ft." Foldats (1969-1970) reported its occurrence in Venezuela in the Federal District and in the states of Anzoátegui at 1300-1650 ft. (400-500 m), Carabobo at 2450-2950 ft. (750-900 m), and Miranda at 1950-2450 ft. (600-750 m). Tropicos (2008) has collections listed from Costa Rica near San José at 2600-2950 ft. (800-900 m), in Bolivia in the department of Cochabamba at 4750 ft. (1450 m), in Brazil in the state of Paraná with no details given, in Ecuador in Los Ríos Province at 250 ft. (70 m) and 1950 ft. (600 m).
