ORIGIN/HABITAT: Brazil. This orchid was originally found in the Organ Mountains in the state of Rio de Janeiro, but is now known to also occur in the states of Espírito Santo, São Paulo, Paraná, and Minas Gerais. Miller and Warren (1994) reported than in the Macaé de Cima Forest Reserve in eastern Rio de Janeiro, these plants are generally found above 3950 ft. (1200 m), growing as mid- to upper-level tree-trunk epiphytes. Fowlie (1976) reported that the variety that has a yellow lip without the red-brown markings near the margin (var. flavum hort.) is found near Nova Friburgo, which lies in the mountains between the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Campos, and that subspecies caloglossum Rchb. f. is found in the state of Espírito Santo.
