ORIGIN/HABITAT: Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica,
Panama, and Colombia. This species is the only Lockhartia found in Mexico,
where it grows in the States of Chiapas, Guerrero, Jalisco, and Oaxaca.
Plants usually grow in mountain forests at elevations up to 8850 ft. (2700
m), but they are occasionally found as low as (650 m) in Nicaragua. They
are most often found on the horizontal limbs of oak trees where they grow
in thick layers of fern roots, old leaves, and humus. In Costa Rica,
plants are found in evergreen forests at 3600-4900 ft. (1100-1500 m). In
Panama, plants occur in numerous locations in Chiriquí Province at
4000-7000 ft. (1220-2130 m).
