ORIGIN/HABITAT: Ecuador. The type specimen was found on the eastern slopes of the Andes near Loja in southern Ecuador. Although formally described in 1874, Jenny (1993) stated that no further finds have been recorded, and it is unlikely that it is in cultivation at this time.
