ORIGIN/HABITAT: The islands of Java, Bali, Flores, Sumatra, and Borneo. In Java, plants are found on mountains throughout the island. While they have been found in forests at 2450-6550 ft. (750-2000 m), Paphiopedilum javanicum is most often found at 4600-5600 ft. (1400-1700 m). Plants grow in deep or partial shade, usually in leaf litter among boulders on the forest floor, but they have also been found growing in a mixture of black volcanic soil and humus, on boulder strewn cliff faces, and in thick pads of humus in wet, spongy ground. In Borneo, plants known as Paphiopdedilum virens or Paphiopedilum javanicum var. virens are found in hill and lower mountain forests where they grow, often in deep shade and above rivers, in rock crevices on steep, boulder strewn slopes at 2950-5600 ft. (900-1700 m).
