The following information is based on the name of the plant provided by the donor, and assumes that the name is correct. If the plant has been misidentified, then the following information may not be correct.
This text is copyrighted by the Bakers and may not be reproduced without permission.

ORIGIN/HABITAT: China. Exact habitat location has not been disclosed. Dr. Fowlie reported the plants as, "Epiphytic on trees north of Biejiang, extreme Western Yunnan, China." This places the habitat in approximately the same area as that of Paphiopedilum armeniacum. This location is substantiated by Cribb (1998) where the habitat was described as follows: "It does, however, come from one of the most remote areas of western China that abuts northern Burma. Good roads into the area are a relatively recent phenomenon. With their advent the number of orchids being collected there has risen dramatically and this has put the known populations under pressure. It grows on north facing rocky slopes in the well-forested Gaoligong Mountains that run north-south parallel to the Burmese border along the western flank of the Salween river (Nujiang)." Habitat elevation was not reported, however. In the Koopowitz description, distribution is given as, "The plants are said to originate in Mengtze, China near the borders of Laos and Cambodia." This should probably read, "near the borders of Vietnam and Laos", or "near the borders of Laos and Burma". In any event, this area is well to the south and east of the area reported by Fowlie and Cribb and seems questionable because China has no border with Cambodia. Since the location reported by Fowlie seems more precise and accurate, we have elected to use climate data from the same station that was used for Paphiopedilum armeniacum and have estimated the habitat elevation at 3000 ft. (910 m). The resulting values, however, should be used with a great deal of caution until more accurate habitat information is available.
