ORIGIN/HABITAT: Calypso bulbosa (Linnaeus) Oakes var. americana (R. Brown)
Luer has a range of distribution with a southern boundary that extends
from eastern Canada and the northeastern United States across the extreme
northern part of the states in the Great Lakes region, curving
northwestward through northern Minnesota and the northern parts of
Canada's prairie provinces. A narrow band of habitat extends southward
along the Rocky Mountains to as far south as Arizona and New Mexico, with
the primary southern boundary extending northwestward across northern
British Colombia to the extreme southern end of the Alaska panhandle. The
southern boundary then extends northward and westward from this point
through all of southern Alaska to the tip of the Alaska Peninsula . The
northern boundary extends from Newfoundland and southern Labrador in
eastern Canada westward across the southern end of Hudson Bay and then
curves northwestward to north-central Alaska before curving southwestward
and terminating on the Yukon Delta on Alaska's southwest coast.
This orchid is rare and local, usually found in shady conditions in
inaccessible old-growth forests, growing primarily in duff comprised of
conifer needles. They may also be found in brighter conditions in more
open, damp cedar-forest swamps in the east growing in deep layers of
mosses, conifer needles, and other vegetative debris. The habitat in the
Rocky Mountains often is in relatively dry pine forests where the plant is
far more successful in reproducing so that in many areas it is considered
common. Plants grow in loose moss or in the rotting humus of the forest
floor.
