ORIGIN/HABITAT: Surinam, British Guyana, and Venezuela at 2800-7000 ft.
(853-2134 m). The plants usually grow in moist areas near waterfalls or
seepage areas. They may be found in rock fissures, in the thin layer of
soil over rocks, or in matted tree roots. Some grow in dark, rocky places
with sparse vegetation on shady, south-facing slopes, while others grow in
open areas with dappled light.
