ORIGIN/HABITAT: Costa Rica, Panama, and northern Colombia. In Colombia,
these plants are always found in very hot, moist habitats at 350-2600 ft.
(100-800 m), especially in the Department of Choco. In Costa Rica, where
the species is extraordinarily rare, Holrich (1974) reported stumbling
upon a single, huge old specimen of this orchid clinging to the base of a
tree in roots and rocks on the semivertical but heavily jungle covered
rock walls of a steep river tributary of the Reventazon River not far from
Cervantes at 3300 ft. (1000 m). A few scattered plants were later found,
also on the Caribbean watershed, east and southeast of Turrialba at El
Alto de las Varas and Grano de Oro at elevations at 1650-2300 ft. (500-700
m). In Panama, the species is relatively common near sea level in the
Canal Zone in the vicinity of Gatún. Plants also grow in Coclé Province in
El Valle de Antón at 2600 ft. (800 m) and in Veraguas Province in the
region west of Santa Fé at 2500-3000 ft. (760-910 m). In this area, the
plants grow on both the Atlantic slope and in adjacent high-rainfall
portions of the Pacific watershed.
