Pod Parent Flowers

Culture Notes from Donor: Parent plant: Temperature range CI (58-75°F). Cold-growing species from Costa Rica and Panama also grows fine in intermediate conditions.

Comments: This is a very big Mormodes... the specific epithet "colossus" does not refer to the flowers, although the flowers are large. The pseudobulb is massive.

Parent plant: Large plant with typical Mormodes flowers. Supposedly also goes by the name macranthum and wendlandii.

For additional origin/habitat information supplied courtesy of Charles and Margaret Baker, see further below, near the bottom of this page.

Temperatures we attempt to use in the lab & greenhouse:
For Species:   Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter: days average 84°F, nights 71°F; best fit is Warm-Intermediate 87-64°F (Source: Baker's Web OSC)

Flask Information
Availability: We have sold all of the flasks for this item.
You should: Consider getting individual plants or compots instead of a flask.
You can place a "Notify Flask Recipients" Request, and either we or a flask recipient may contact you when plants are available.

You may also place a "Notify Retries" Request, and if an identical pollination (the same parents) is done again, we'll let you know.

You may reserve a flask, but it's very unlikely you'll get one ...this could only happen if we found a flask that we didn't know we had.
Yield Estimate: 345 plants (based on flask surveys done 01/20/2003 through 02/26/2004)
Yield estimates are only approximate, but may appear to be fairly exact numbers because they are a combination of large rough estimates in remaining mother flasks and more accurate small estimates in reflasks.
Plantlet Sizes: From many flasks 25 - 90 mm plants (based on flask surveys done 09/10/2003 through 07/07/2004)
From one most recently surveyed flask 40 - 90 mm (07/07/2004)

The origin/habitat information below is supplied courtesy of Charles and Margaret Baker

The following information is based on the name of the plant provided by the donor, and assumes that the name is correct. If the plant has been misidentified, then the following information may not be correct.

ORIGIN/HABITAT: Costa Rica and Panama. Dressler (1993) reported that this plant is found in Costa Rica and western Panama in the mountains and on the Caribbean watershed. Williams & Allen [(1946-1949) 1980] reported collections in the Canal Zone of Panama at near sea level and in Coclé Province at 2600-3300 ft. (800-1000 m). We are uncertain of this information, however, because Williams and Allen included two species as synonyms that are no longer considered synonymous with Mormodes collosus
