ORIGIN/HABITAT: Fairly widespread in the American tropics, including
southern Central America, the Caribbean Islands, and northern South
America to Bolivia and Peru. In Nicaragua, plants grow in lower mountain
cloudforest, with collections reported from Volcano Mombacho in the
department of Granada at 4050 ft. (1230 m). In Costa Rica, plants are
found in cloudforest at 4900—6550 ft. (1500—2000 m). Plants have been
reported in southwestern Ecuador where they were growing in El Oro
Province in wet cloudforest at 2600 ft. (800 m). In Peru, plants have been
seen in cool, wet cloudforest near Oxapampa in the department of Pasco at
6150 ft. In the Caribbean, plants have been found on Guadeloupe Island in
humid forests at 3300—3950 ft. (1000—1200 m).
