ORIGIN/HABITAT: D. masarangense subsp masarangense is distributed over a wide area from Sulawesi to Fiji, including many provinces in New Guinea, New Britain Island, Bougainville, Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, and Viti Levu in Fiji. Plants usually grow on trees in lowland forests at 980-3950 ft. (300-1200 m). D. masarangense subsp. theionanthum var. theionanthum grows in the mountains throughout New Guinea. The habitat includes the Vogelkop Peninsula, Mt. Jaya (Mt. Carstensz), Mt. Doorman, and Mt. Wilhelmina in Irian Jaya (western New Guinea), most provinces of Papua, and Goodenough Island. Plants usually grow on the twigs of trees and shrubs or among young secondary regrowth. They are found on steep, exposed ridges and summits where light is high and air movement is strong. Habitat extends from 2600-10,660 ft. (800-3250 m), but plants usually grow above 4900 ft. (1500 m), and most collections are made at 6550-8200 ft. (2000-2500 m). D. masarangense subsp theionanthum var. chlorinum grows only in Irian Jaya (western New Guinea) near Mt. Jaya (Mt. Carstensz) at about 3950 ft. (1200 m).
