ORIGIN/HABITAT: Widespread from Mexico southward through all of Central America, the West Indies. Distribution continues into Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Venezuela, and the Guianas in South America. Plants grow on trees and shrubs, generally in hot, humid, wet forests at elevations below 2600 ft. (800 m). They are often found growing on shrubs in pastures and on coffee and citrus trees on cultivated plantations.
