ORIGIN/HABITAT: The Antilles Islands. Plants have been reported from
Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and St. Croix in the Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe,
La Desirade, St. Barthelemy, Barbuda, Antigua, Little St. James, and St.
Eustache.
Plants from many of these islands were reported to be Tetramicra
canaliculata (Aublet) Urban, but if, as defined by Dod, that species is
endemic to Hispaniola, plants from the previously listed islands are
probably Tetramicra elegans. Moir (1978) reported finding Tetramicra
elegans in the Virgin Islands growing on coral at the tops of cliffs above
the sea where ocean spray and salty air continually covered plants. .
Ackerman (1995) did not completely accept Dod's suggested division of the
two closely related species and stated that he felt additional
field-oriented study was necessary to clarify the relationships. He
included Tetramicra elegans as a synonym of Tetramicra canaliculata and
reported plants as occurring but uncommon in southwestern Puerto Rico and
indicated that they are locally common in the Virgin Islands. He further
reported that they grow on trees, serpentine rocks, fossil coral, or
limestone in exposed sites in either dry or moist regions from sea level
to about 1950 ft. (0-600 m).
