ORIGIN/HABITAT: Hispaniola. Plants are adaptable and grow in semiarid,
arid, and moist regions in both dry and humid subtropical forests from
near sea level to about 2300 ft. (0-700 m), although collections have been
reported from as high as 3700 ft. (1130 m). The varieties albo-rubra and
auro-rubra, however, have been found only in the lower-elevation, drier
habitats.
