ORIGIN/HABITAT: Brazil. This orchid grows on trees in the moist coastal
mountains in the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais southward
through São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul. Plants
are also reported far to the north in Pernambuco. In Rio de Janeiro, Minas
Gerais, and São Paulo, plants are usually found in the swamps of coastal
mountains and subtropical rainforests at 1650-2950 ft. (500-900 m). They
are seldom found above 3950 ft. (1200 m). Miller and Warren (1994) report
that in the Macaé de Cima Forest Reserve in eastern Rio de Janeiro this
species is mostly a mid-tree epiphyte. They further state that it is
occasionally found as a terrestrial in forests that are regrowing after
being burned.
