ORIGIN/HABITAT: Brazil. Plants were originally found on iron ore outcrops
near the iron mines in the Serra dos Inglêses above Itabira. This area is
about 45 mi. (72 km) east-northeast of Belo Horizonte in Minas Gerais.
Plants normally grow on rocks at 2600–4250 ft. (800–1300 m), but early
visitors to the habitat reported that the roots are usually imbedded in
the moss, lichens, detritus, and plant debris that fills the rock
crevices. This material around the roots allows good drainage but still
holds moisture during the dry season.
Although not described until 1960, this species is now considered
extremely rare if not extinct in nature because of overcollecting and the
destruction of most of its habitat by strip-mining. By 1990 the only
plants still found in the habitat were in a few small areas growing around
Vellozia shrubs on steep slopes. Even these last small populations may be
gone by this time, however.
