ORIGIN/HABITAT: Mexico. Plants are widely distributed in the mountains of
western Mexico in the states of Sinaloa, Durango, Nayarit, Jalisco,
Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Puebla. Normally found on oak and juniper
trees, plants also grow on yuccas, and they occasionally are found on
rocks. Plants are most often found in open, dry deciduous mixed forests of
pine, oak, and juniper at 4600–7550 ft. (1400–2300 m). Sometimes, however,
they also are found in humid but seasonally dry forests.
