ORIGIN/HABITAT: Guyana. The type specimen originated in the country
previously known as Demerara, which then became British Guyana, is now
Guyana. Habitat location and elevation were not reported, and there have
been no recent discoveries in this area. Dunsterville and Garay (1959)
listed Gongora maculata as a synonym of Gongora quinquenervis and
indicated it had been found in northeastern Venezuela. Schweinfurth (1967)
reported that Gongora maculata was found at several locations in the
Territory of Amazonas in southwest Venezuela at 1950-4900 ft. (600-1500
m). The information about these two species is so inextricably intertwined
in the literature that there is no way of knowing which plant is being
discussed by any one writer. Jenny (1993) stated, "All information on
Gongora maculata must also be treated carefully, as it is only seldom
really clear if the author actually had a plant before him which
corresponded to Lindley's concept of Gongora maculata. Readers interested
in a complete history of this species and the confusion surrounding it
should see Rudolf Jenny's 1993 Monograph of the Genus Gongora.
Regrettably, there is too little information pertaining to the habitat
that is certain to allow the selection of representative climate data or
the formulation of cultural suggestions. As there are no known recent
collections of Gongora maculata, and Jenny (1993) states that, "If the
form illustrated by John Day is assumed to be Gongora maculata and the
area of distribution accepted to be mainly Guyana, then it must be
reasoned that Gongora maculata is very seldom seen in culture at present."
