ORIGIN/HABITAT: Mexico through Central America to northern South America and eastward to the West Indies and Florida. Plants grow on trees and rocks in thorn thickets, open pine/oak forests, and on trees on coffee plantations. In Mexico, plants grow on the eastern mountain slopes that drain into the Gulf of Mexico in the states of Oaxaca, San Luis Potosí, and Veracruz near 5250 ft. (1600 m). In Belize, plants grow in the Cayo District including the Mountain Pine Ridge Reserve, but it is uncommon. Elevation was not reported for the Belize habitat, but the terrain in that area seldom exceeds 3300 ft. (1000 m). In Guatemala, plants grow on the hillsides that constitute the Caribbean watershed at up to 5250 ft. (1600 m). In the mountains of the Huehuetenango District, plants grow near sea level close to Livingston on the Río Dulce near the coast.
