The following information is based on the name of the plant provided by the donor, and assumes that the name is correct. If the plant has been misidentified, then the following information may not be correct.

ORIGIN/HABITAT: Colombia. Plants were originally found in the Magdalena River Valley at an unspecified location and elevation. They have since been found along the same river and its tributaries in the departments of Huila, Tolima and Cundinamarca. In earlier times Cattleya trianae was reportedly widespread in all 3 Cordilleras between about 2 and 5 north latitude, but they are now rare because of excessive over-collection and habitat destruction. In years past, the better forms were reportedly found mostly in the Huila region, but most plants now in cultivation originated in Tolima. Plants grow near rivers or streams on trees and rocks at 2600-4900 ft. (800-1500 m). They are found in a rather dry region where numerous cacti and succulent bromeliads also grow.
