Comments: Epidendrum ilense is assumed to be extinct in its native habitat. The only six plants ever found in the wild were rescued during landclearing in Ecuador in 1976, and all known plants in existence today are descendants of those last six specimens; that's pretty near to a species becoming completely extinct and not leaving a trace. This epidendrum is a lovely reedstem with pendant inflorescences carrying fabulously fringed snow white flowers, blooming repeatedly from both old stems and new stems during the season.

The following information is based on the name of the plant provided by the donor, and assumes that the name is correct. If the plant has been misidentified, then the following information may not be correct.

ORIGIN/HABITAT: Ecuador. The habitat was apparently restricted to a small
region in Pinchincha Province in the western foothills of the Andes.
Plants were collected just south of the equator at the southern end of the
Montañas de Ila where they grew as epiphytes in very wet cloudforest at
about 1750 ft. (540 m).
