Culture Notes from Donor: Pod parent plant: Temperature range CI (58-75°F)
Comments: This is a relatively easy member of the oxyglossum group to grow and flower. The blooms can last for months and when the plant is mature it can cover itself in blooms.
Pod parent plant: I have two cultivars of this species both mounted on the same piece of cork - this cultivar was obtained from Stocker's nursery. The flower is a beautiful pale greenish pink at the tips of the sepals and petals and a much richer bluish pink. The lip is pale green at the base becoming a dark purple in the middle and brilliant orange at the tip.

ORIGIN/HABITAT: New Guinea. D. violaceum subsp.violaceum is found from the
West Nassau Mountains in Irian Jaya (western New Guinea) to Milne Bay
Province at the southeastern tip of the island. Plants usually grow at
2450-6550 ft. (750-2000 m) in the higher-light conditions of juvenile
secondary forest or at the margins of primary mountain forests. Plants are
epiphytic, but they occasionally grow on rocks or the surface of the
ground. D. violaceum subsp. cyperifolium occurs primarily in Irian Jaya
(western New Guinea), where it grows on Mt. Jaya (Mt. Carstensz), in the
Cyclop Mountains, and near Wissel Lakes. However, the orchids also grow in
the western part of Papua New Guinea in East Sepik, West Sepik, and Enga
provinces. They are frequently found on the horizontal branches of
mistforest trees on the open slopes of the Finisterre Range at 3950-6550
ft. (1200-2000 m).
