Incoming seed is examined to determine embryo count to help decide how much seed should be sown, and/or which capsule would be the best to sow. Permanent sample slides are also prepared. Each separate package of seed is examined because these are generally from separate capsules, which is what we request from our donors.

Packet received was a folded coffee filter.
Capsule had split and its contents have made contact with its exterior.
Seed is off-white to the naked eye, and very clumpy. Seed appears to be similar to that in assay 2559, with no embryos. |

Packet received was a folded coffee filter.
Capsule had split and its contents have made contact with its exterior.
Seed is off-white to the naked eye, and somewhat clumpy. Only a small quantity of seed was received. Moderately small seeds are long and very thin, irregularly curved, and have no embryos. Dark enclosures in the photo are trapped air in the seed coats. |
Photographed with transmitted light.
Scale 1 mm or 0.040 inches
