Incoming seed is examined to determine embryo count to help decide how much seed should be sown, and/or which capsule would be the best to sow. Permanent sample slides are also prepared. Each separate package of seed is examined because these are generally from separate capsules, which is what we request from our donors.

Yellow capsule had spoilage at the column end. Pulp was not fully matured, seed coat cells were still liquid filled and not hardened. Seed was dried for assay and disinfection. Seeds are moderately large, probably air-filled at maturity, but very frangible at this age. Most seeds are empty, but a few have very small possible embryos. It's likely that the plant rejected this capsule before maturity because most of the seed is not viable. We are sowing it in case the few embryos will grow. |
