ORIGIN/HABITAT: Peninsular Thailand. Paphiopedilum godefroyae is found on islands in the Krabi-Phuket Gulf along the west coast of the peninsula and on the Bird's Nest Islands in the Gulf of Thailand on the east coast. Plants grow on limestone cliffs, usually at less than 50 ft. (15 m). They are generally found in hollows and crevices in the limestone that are filled with humus and leaf litter, but they also grow on ledges with their roots embedded in deep humus. Occasionally they are found growing on the moss-covered tree roots. Plants on the Bird's Nest Islands grow only on the west side of the islands, while those on islands in the Krabi-Phuket Gulf are usually found on the north side of the islands. In both instances, plants grow where they are shaded from direct sunlight for most of the day.
