ORIGIN/HABITAT: Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. This orchid grows both as an epiphyte and as a terrestrial. In Costa Rica, plants are found in the mountains at elevations above 2600 ft. (800 m). This orchid has been collected at many locations in Peru in the Departments of Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Huánuco, Junín, Loreto, and San Martín. Most were found at elevations of 3300-4900 ft. (1000-1500 m), but plants have been reported from as low as 2050 ft. (625 m) and as high as 10,150 ft. (3100 m). In Ecuador, numerous collections have been reported between Morona and Santiago at 2300-3600 ft. (700-1100 m), in Napo Province at 1500 ft. (450 m), near Baños at 5750 ft. (1750 m), and between Loja and Zamora in Zamora-Chinchipe Province at 5250 ft. (1600 m). This information is as reported in the literature. Because of the confused taxonomy for this species, however, we are not completely certain that all the information actually applies to Xylobium squalens. According to Pridgeon (1993), the most recent publication treating this species, it is found from Costa Rica southward to Brazil at elevations of 650-1000 ft. (200-1000 m).
