ORIGIN/HABITAT: Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela. In Colombia, plants are found in many areas at 5600-9200 ft. (1700-2800 m) in the western cordillera of the Andes from near Medellín southward to northern Ecuador as well as in the eastern cordillera northward to near the Venezuelan border. In Ecuador, plants are found only in the north near Quito, usually at 700–900 ft. (2300-3000 m). However, collections at 13,450-14,750 ft. (4100-4500 m) on Mt. Pichincha have been reported. In Venezuela, plants have been collected in the state of Mérida near the Colombian border. In addition, Dunsterville and Garay (1966) and Foldats (1970) reported collections in the state of Aragua near Maracay at 3950 ft. (1200 m), but this location was not reported by Luer and Escobar (1996).
