This epiphytic to terrestrial species is found relatively frequently throughout its wide range of distribution along the easten slopes of the Andes. While usually epiphytic, plants may also be found growing as terrestrials. In the north, plants occur in the Eastern Cordillera of Venezuela and Colombia. They grow in the Venezuelan State of Mérida and the Colombian Department of Santander at 7850-10,500 ft. (2400-3200 m). In southern Colombia, plants are found in cloudforests at 8850 ft. (2700 m) in the Intendancy of Putumayo between La Cocha and Sibundoy. In Ecuador, they grow in the Provinces of Bolívar, Morona-Santiago, Napo and Pastaza While these locations are mostly on the eastern slopes, plants are found on the westrn slopes in Bolívar Province. The plants grow in wet forests or cloudforests at 4900-7550 ft. (1500-2300 m) on the eastern slopes, while collections on the western slopes are usually made at 8700-10,200 ft. (2650-3100 m).
