ORIGIN/HABITAT: Nicaragua in Central America, while in South America, collections have been reported in Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, with most of the collections being made in Ecuador. In Nicaragua, plants have been found in the department of Jinotega at 3950-4250 ft. (1200-1300 m). In Venezuela, a collection was made in the state of Sucre at 200 ft. (60 m). In Ecuador, plants have been found in Loja Province at 8850-9850 ft. (2700-3000 m), in Morona-Santiago Province at 3300-4750 ft. (1000-1450 m), in Napo Province at 4900-5600 ft.(1500-1700 m), in Pastaza Province between Baños and Puyo at 4900 ft. (1500 m), at many locations in Pichincha Province at 2950-6550 ft. (900-2000 m), but mostly at about 4900 ft. (1500 m), in Tungurahua Province between Baños and Puyo at 4250-5750 ft. (1300-1750 m) and on Mt. Tungurahua at 8200 ft. (2500 m), and in Zamora-Chinchipe Province at 3300-5250 ft. (1000-1600 m). Plants in Peru have been found in the departments of Cajamarca and San Martín at 3600-5250 ft. (1100-1600 m). In Bolivia, a collection was reported from the Yungas region in the northern part of the department of La Paz at 5600 ft. (1700 m).
