The origin/habitat information below is supplied courtesy of Charles and Margaret Baker
The following information is based on the name of the plant provided by the donor, and assumes that the name is correct. If the plant has been misidentified, then the following information may not be correct.
This text is copyrighted by the Bakers and may not be reproduced without permission.
ORIGIN/HABITAT: Malaya and Myanmar (Burma). In Malaya, plants have been
found in Perak State near Ipoh and Tapah and in Johore State. In Myanmar,
plants have been found in the Chin Hills near Falam of western Myanmar
near the border with India. Habitat elevation has not been reported from
either area, but Ipoh, Malaya is located in a river valley surrounded on 3
sides by mountains, of which the highest is over 6000 ft. (1829 m), while
Falam, Myanmar is located in the mountains in a region where topographical
maps indicate an elevation of at least 3300 ft. (1000 m). As might be
expected, the climates of the two regions are dramatically different.
Falam has very cool, dry winters, while the Malay climate has little
seasonal variation. Because of the climatic differences between the two
regions, we are including climate tables and cultural suggestions for
both. Growers should determine, if possible, the origin of their plant and
provide the suggested conditions for that region.
The following climate table and cultural suggestions should be used for
plants from Malaya. As habitat elevations have not been reported, these
cultural suggestions should be used somewhat cautiously.
