ORIGIN/HABITAT: China, Taiwan, Japan, and the Ryukyu Islands. In China, this orchid is found in the provinces of Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Hunan, Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, and Yunnan. Plants usually are found in slight shade in moist, rocky soil if forests or along ravines at 1300-7850 ft. (400-2400 m). In Taiwan, plants are found in broad-leaved forests at 2600-4600 ft. (800-1400 m), usually in areas with strong air movement near ridges on southeast slopes. In Japan, plants have been found on the islands of Honshu, Kyushu, and Shikoku, but I have been unable to find details of precise location or elevation of the habitat in Japan. In the Ryukyus, plants have been found at numerous locations on Okinawa, most of which have probably escaped from cultivation.
