ORIGIN/HABITAT: Widespread throughout the tropics, including Asia and Africa. In Asia, distribution extends from the northwest Himalayan region, southward and eastward to northeast India, Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand, Malaya, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and China. Distribution reportedly extends to Africa where plants have been found from Transvaal to Kenya, on the islands of Mombasa and Madagascar, and on the Comore Islands. In Sikkim and Bhutan, plants are found in tropical valleys at about 3950 ft. (1200 m). In Sri Lanka, where it is reported to be rare. this orchid is found on trees in mid-country tropical wet evergreen forests at 1000-3000 ft. (300-910 m). In Thailand, plants are found in the northern and western mountains at 1500-1950 ft. (460-600 m) as well as southward along the Thai peninsula. In Malaya, plants are found only in the state of Pinang and on Langkawi Island. In Vietnam, collections have been reported from northeastern Vietnam near Cao Bang and Ha Giang at 1000-2600 ft. (300-800 m). Plants in this area grow as lithophytes on karst limestone outcrops and cliffs among shrubs and in open, primary and secondary forests of broad-leaved, mixed, and coniferous trees. In China, this orchid occurs in southern Yunnan Province, Guangxi (Kwangsa) Province, Kwangtung Province, Hong Kong, and on Hainan Island with plants growing on shady cliffs or on trees at the edge of forests at 1950-2300 ft. (600-700 m).
