Once a stem starts to bloom it can remain in bloom for many months even if it sets capsules. The plant grows as a clump of linear soft leaves about 1 foot long with the flower stems growing well above the foliage. The 1.5 inch purple flowers open near the tip of the stem starting at a little over a foot and continuing to produce more flowers as the stem elongates over many months. Medium-sized plant. |
Donor's culture notes: |
Temperature range Warm-Intermediate 87-64°F, in the cooler season Cool-Intermediate 75-58°F. Potted in a mix of equal parts potting soil or peat moss, fine bark, and 1/2 to 1 part sand or chicken grit to make a well-drained, but always damp medium works well. This plant likes moisture but does not like to stay wet. It's a good grower with strong roots. It can be invasive if planted outdoors in subtropical areas. Each individual flower doesn't last all that long (maybe 2 weeks) but the stem continues to elongate producing many flowers over a long period. A decent clump can produce many stems making a great display for most of the year. Grow as a terrestrial in a water-retentive, but well-drained mix. Material sold as chicken grit makes an excellent, inexpensive sand substitute. |
