Large plant. Typical plant of many in the genus. Plant was a division with two pseudobulbs, producing two flower spikes. Flowers are crisp white with little or no spots - perhaps one to three spots on the entire bloom. Labellum heavy and waxy with an egg yolk yellow hypochile transitioning to white. Mesochile and epichile glossy white lightly speckled with red. Winged column gently arched and pale green. Wings translucent white and lightly speckled red on underside. Time lapse opening of last bud shows compressed time of about 30 minutes. Filming started as soon as a small crease opened along the edge of the dorsal sepal. The process started around 10:00 AM, ambient temperature was around 70º F. Fragrant of course, but the odor is unusual - not bad and not good - different. Some have said it smells of vanilla, but I've smelled drying vanilla pods in the air at a plantation in Tahiti and this flower smells nothing like it. |
