Comments: Rare collected species from Oaxaca, Mexico. The population of E. mariae seems to be moving south and the plants in this region appear to be better bloomers then the more commonly know plants from the northern areas of Mexico. This plant has consistently bloomed 3 or 4 flowers per inflorescence for the past 3 years, rather then the usual 1 or 2. Small plant.
Donor's culture notes: Temperature range W (70-90°F). Heat tolerance is a problem with E. mariae. The Oaxaca plants seem to have adapted to the warmer clime in addition to having more flowers per inflorescence. The locational areas of native growth seem to be following the river southwards from the northern parent population. These plants are definitely more heat tolerant but still require a cool spell to set spike. Here in Naples, Florida we have had the weather to make that happen for the last two years running. Acclimating the plants took a year for some and two for others. Now, of 9 sibs, they all are setting spike with 3 to 4 flowers per inflorescence. The spike itself is relatively strong and the plants don't pendulate as much as the northern form but still require staking if you want to show off the lip. I grow all these plants mounted. Bare mounts, no moss or anything else. They work in Naples, that way, no shame to these guys. They have been through two summers of over 95 degree heat, in the shade of my lime tree. They are doing fine. New growth averages one new growth per bulb on all the plants. So it looks like these have developed the heat tolerance to make them a little easier to deal with as well as providing another couple flowers each bloom out.
