Comments: This plant was wild-collected in Belize in 1999. This is the rare, branching, paniculate form very rarely found; as mentioned by Ames & Correll in their "Orchids of Guatemala & Belize" (1952). Instead of only 1-3 flowers opening at a time as is customary with plants of this species, this form generally has more than a dozen open flowers at a time on the branched spikes. My record so far is 23 on a spike on this plant. The flowers are quite strongly and pleasantly scented at various times during the day. I am afraid the photo does not do it justice since some spikes were older and already losing flowers, and others were just getting started at the time the photo was taken. Medium-sized plant.
Donor's culture notes: Temperature range W (70-90°F). Encyclia cochleata does well in intermediate to warm temperatures, bright light, reasonable humidity; it is known for its ease of culture and undemanding nature.
Unique ID: MC1579
(this will not change even if any part of the name should change)
