Blooming Plant

Comments: An adorable, though not showy species of this genus of show stoppers in miniature. Flowers held singly on erect, wiry inflorescences at or below leaf height, somewhat downward facing, with sepaline aperture at about a 135-degree angle, relative to pot level. Sepaline tube sparkling, diaphanous white with two opposite near-clear windows of very thin tissue basally; dorsal sepal hooded, dorsal tail of bright lime green held at an angle confluent to the opening of the sepaline tube; lateral sepals bluntly connate ending abruptly in lime green caudae held perfectly flat relative to the opening of the sepaline tube with the distal third curving downwards; dissection of flower reveals minuscule labellum of very pale yellow; petals glistening white and extremely small; texture sparkling, substance diaphanous. Natural spread 0.8cm horizontally, 0.6cm vertically; dorsal sepal 0.3cm wide, 0.4cm long; lateral sepals 0.2 cm wide, 0.4 cm long; petals minute; labellum minute. Truly a plant for the "botanical wonder" category, this is not a plant for a lover of showy orchids. Overall, a very cute plant and flower, but relatively insignificant, compared to M. coccinea or veitchiana. Overall plant height at maturity is only five centimeters, so it certainly isn't a space hog.
Donor's culture notes: Must be grown under cool temperatures (55°F to 72°F, 12.8°C to 22.2°C) with high humidity (at least 80% relative humidity), excellent water quality a must. I grow this and other Masdevallia species mounted, but drying out is not permitted for more than a day.
Unique ID: MC1019
