FAQ: What is the best way to store and send pollen?

Question:
What is the best way to store and send pollen? Like I send seed?

Answer:
No need to dry it, but like seed, do NOT enclose in plastic, only paper. Pollen is best if uncrushed and unbruised, so if you can rig some sort of protection against that, that's best.

If you are storing it yourself for a long time, refrigerate at 4°C/40°F in a closed container enclosed with an open small container of calcium chloride that has just enough water added to it to make it slushy (solid & liquid). We use equal parts by volume of water and anhydrous calcium chloride pellets. This provides the 30% relative humidity at 4°C which makes it last longer.
Caution: Anhydrous calcium chloride evolves quite a bit of heat when water is first added to it.
In the USA in many locations, anhydrous calcium chloride can be purchased at hardware stores under the brand name of "Dri-Z-Air" refills.
