ORIGIN/HABITAT: Mexico and Central America including Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. Plants usually grow on trees in bright light in dry, deciduous, tropical forests or in forests of evergreen oaks, but they occasionally grow on rocks in full sun. Although generally considered a lower elevation species, plants are adaptable and also grow at higher elevations. In Mexico, plants are found over a large area in the states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, México, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Puebla, Veracruz, Tabasco, Chiapas, Campeche, Quintana Roo, and Yucatán. Habitat elevation is reported as 350–5600 ft. (100–1700 m).
