ORIGIN/HABITAT: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Costa Rica, and Panama. In Colombia, these plants were first found in the Department of Cauca where they were growing in trees of moist forests near Popayán at 5250-6550 ft. (1600-2000 m). They have since been found at numerous other locations in western and southern Colombia at 3300-6550 ft. (1000-2000 m). Collections have also been made in Ecuador, mostly at 4250-5900 ft. (1300-1800 m), but with plants reported from as low as 1000 ft. (300 m) and from as high as 10,750 ft. (3280 m). Plants have also been found in Peru in the Department of Amazonas with no additional details reported. Plants formerly known as Restrepia subserrata Schlechter are found in Costa Rica and Panama. In Panama, they have been found in Chiriquí Province at 5900-6550 ft. (1800-6550 m). Luer (1996) stated, "As presently conceived, R. trichoglossa is a frequent, widely distributed species-complex that occurs from Chiapas, Mexico, through Central America into the Andes of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
