ORIGIN/HABITAT: Widespread in the Mediterranean region from North Africa
and southern Europe northward to the foothills of the Alps, with
distribution continuing eastward to the Caspian Sea. Plants grow in full
sun to medium shade on dry to moist substrates in alkaline, often
calcareous, in short, poor grasslands or open woodlands at elevations up
to 5900 ft. (1800 m).
