Pod Parent Plant

Culture Notes from Donor: Parent plant: Temperature range I (60-83°F)

Comments: Plant purchased with seed pod. Labeled as Dendrochilum species from Fiji. Will be identified when it blooms.

Parent plant: Wonderful tight growth habit. Leaves spatulate. Raceme rises up above foliage. Seed capsules are round, about 5 mm in diameter. Vertical spread of approx. 20 cm. Growth habit and raceme (dried) is similar to cobbianum but smaller in stature. Compact and ideal for in pot growth. Seems to withstand cooler temperatures growing outdoors in San Diego (down to the 40°Fs). Very interesting green seed. Medium-sized plant.

About the name...
Etymology of Dendrochilum   From Greek "dendron" tree; "cheilos" lip. (Source: Pridgeon 1992)
Etymology of sp.   An abbreviation of the word "species," it indicates that based on the provenance of the plant it is believed to be naturally occurring, but the identity is as yet undetermined. (Source: Troy Meyers)
Pronunciation of Dendrochilum   den-droe-KYE-lum (Source: Pridgeon 1992)
Pronunciation of sp.   Here, we say "spuh" rather than "species" to convey without explanation that it's an unidentified species. (Source: Troy Meyers)
