Culture Notes from Donor: Parent plant: Temperature range W (70-90°F)
Comments: Species belongs in section Speciosae, and has a long arching/pendulous inflorescence that produces a succession of large single flowers over a period of several months. Although this species has occasionally been recorded from as low as zero metres altitude (herbarium records), it is usually considered to be a mountain plant. The Lake Matano population are acclimatised to lowland conditions, i.e. warm to hot, humidity only moderate, and a dry season from July/August to October/November. Plants were growing in light shade to deep shade.
Parent plant: Plant's origin: epiphytic on a small tree on a limestone islet in Lake Matano in Sulawesi, Indonesia. The species is common on stunted lakeside trees, often on branches overhanging the water. Some specimens were growing lithophytically on limestone. New growths (with inflorescences) were just starting to appear in mid-October, towards the end of the dry season. Large plant.

Flask Information |
Availability: |
We have sold all of the flasks for this item. |
You should: |
Consider getting individual plants or compots instead of a flask. You can place a "Notify Flask Recipients" Request, and either we or a flask recipient may contact you when plants are available.
You may also place a "Notify Retries" Request, and if an identical pollination (the same parents) is done again, we'll let you know.
You may reserve a flask, but it's very unlikely you'll get one ...this could only happen if we found a flask that we didn't know we had. |
Yield Estimate: |
120 plants (based on flask surveys done 09/30/2003 )
|
Plantlet Sizes: |
From many flasks 30 - 120 mm plants (based on flask surveys done 01/02/2004 through 03/16/2004)
From one most recently surveyed flask 30 - 120 mm (03/16/2004)

ORIGIN/HABITAT: Sulawesi (formerly The Celebes). Plants have been found in
southeast Sulawesi near Kolaka and near Macassar (then Makassar and now
Ujung Pandang). Habitat elevation was not reported, so the following
climate table and cultural suggestions are based on an estimated elevation
and should be used with a great deal of caution until actual elevations
are known.
