Flasks of
Chysis bractescens 'Snowdrop' × self

Number: TN3204
Name: Chysis bractescens 'Snowdrop' × self
Type: self    (What's that?)
Seed Donor: Carol J. Watson  (Email: CJWatson@cox.net)

No Photos Available

Culture Notes from Donor: Parent plant: Temperature range W (70-90°F). Due to its large size and pendent habit, this plant needs to be mounted or in a basket in partial shade, kept moist during the growing season and allowed to rest during the winter.

Comments: Chysis bractescens is found in Mexico, Guatemala and Belize and is uncommonly seen. It is a deciduous plant with peculiar hanging cigar-shaped pseudobulbs up to 40+cm in length and 5 cm in width, with leaves up to 40 cm long. It blooms from a multi-floral inflorescence formed on the new growth in the spring, the waxy white flowers reaching 7-8 cm across. A large, interesting plant even when not in bloom.

Parent plant: This particular cultivar has snow white flowers and a tendency to put out two inflorescences per growth rather than the customary one. Large plant.

Flask Information
Availability: We have sold all of the flasks for this item.
You should: Consider getting individual plants or compots instead of a flask.
You can place a "Notify Flask Recipients" Request, and either we or a flask recipient may contact you when plants are available.

You may also place a "Notify Retries" Request, and if an identical pollination (the same parents) is done again, we'll let you know.

You may reserve a flask, but it's very unlikely you'll get one ...this could only happen if we found a flask that we didn't know we had.
Yield Estimate: 150 plants (based on flask surveys done 02/26/2004 )
Yield estimates are only approximate, but may appear to be fairly exact numbers because they are a combination of large rough estimates in remaining mother flasks and more accurate small estimates in reflasks.
Plantlet Sizes: From many flasks 30 - 80 mm plants (based on flask surveys done 06/02/2004 through 06/14/2004)
From one most recently surveyed flask 30 - 70 mm (06/14/2004)

The origin/habitat information below is supplied courtesy of Charles and Margaret Baker

The following information is based on the name of the plant provided by the donor, and assumes that the name is correct. If the plant has been misidentified, then the following information may not be correct.

ORIGIN/HABITAT: Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. These widespread but uncommon plants are normally found on the lower slopes of mountains facing the Gulf of Mexico or the Caribbean from the State of Vera Cruz in Mexico southward to Nicaragua, but they have also been reported from the Pacific-facing slopes in El Salvador. Plants usually grow as epiphytes in wet mountain forests below 2800 ft. (850 m), but the collection in Nicaragua was made at 4900 ft. (1500 m).
