The following information is based on the name of the plant provided by the donor, and assumes that the name is correct. If the plant has been misidentified, then the following information may not be correct.

ORIGIN/HABITAT: Mexico south through Central America to Costa Rica,
including the West Indies. This orchid has also been reported from
Colombia, but we have been unable to locate any details of its occurrence
there. It has also been reported in Bolivia both as Oncidium bolivianense
Oppenheim and Oncidium subulifolium Schlechter. In Mexico, this normally
low-elevation species is found on the slopes of the foot-hills facing the
Gulf of Mexico. It grows on trees in swamps, pastures, coffee plantations,
and open forests at elevations up to 4900 ft. (1500 m) in the states of
Chiapas, Oaxaca, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, and Yucatán. In Guatemala, plants
are found in similar habitats and at about the same elevations as in
Mexico, but plants are found on both the Caribbean and the Pacific slopes.
Plants are common throughout Belize where they grow in swamps, pastures,
and open mountain forests. Oncidium ascendens is found at 2600-3300 ft.
(800-1000 m) in El Salvador, and in Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica,
plants are found in the lowlands and on mountain slopes below 2800 ft.
(850 m) on both the Caribbean and Pacific sides of the isthmus. In
Bolivia, plants formerly known as Oncidium bolivianense Oppenheim and
Oncidium subulifolium Schlechter are usually found at 650-1950 ft.
(200-600 m). They are common in dry, tropical forests around the city of
Santa Cruz but are uncommon in humid tropical forests along the border
between the Departments of Santa Cruz and Cochabamba.
