ORIGIN/HABITAT: Ecuador and Peru. In Ecuador, plants have been found growing as epiphytes or terrestrials on steep slopes in wet mountain cloudforest, and many collections have been reported in Pichincha Province at 5600--9850 ft. (1700-3000 m), with fewer collections reported in Cañar Province at 4600-4900 ft. (1400-1500 m). Schweinfurth (1958-1961) included this species as occurring in Peru but gave no details of the habitat there except to report that it was found near Chachapoyas in the department of Amazonas.
