ORIGIN/HABITAT: India, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. This
orchid has two very distinct varieties, however, with the type variety
being an upland form found in northeast India. The second variety is from
lower elevations in the eastern part of the range.
In India, the type variety is widespread in the tropical forests of the
eastern Himalayan ranges at about 2300 ft. (700 m). It is also found on
the outer range of the western Himalaya, in Sikkim, Bhutan, the Khasia
Hills, Assam, the Orissa district, Chota Nagpur, North Bengal,
Vizagapatam, and the Rumpa Hills. Plants grow in east, west, and central
Nepal at 1000-3500 ft. (300-1065 m).
Christenson (1993), indicated that plants found in the eastern part of the
range are actually Aerides multiflora var. godefroyana (Rchb. f.) Veitch
and grow at lower elevations across Thailand and Southeast Asia.
Plants are found in the Andaman Islands, near Mergui and Moulmein in
Burma, on the Vientiane Plain in Laos, near Camchay and Moulou Prey in
Cambodia, and at several locations throughout Vietnam.
